BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTS

We are committed to helping businesses remain in Inglewood and thrive during construction and operation of the ITC.

Here we highlight businesses along the alignment and their unique contributions to Inglewood.

Randy's Donuts & Chinese Food

For 44 years, Randy’s Donuts & Chinese Food in Inglewood has served a loyal clientele. To be clear, this is not the iconic establishment with the multi-story donut towering toward the sky, but rather the popular cafeteria by the same name located at the end of a strip mall on N. Market Street. So, while it’s not that Randy’s, it’s just as beloved by its long-time customers, a community with a diverse and faithful clientele.

Red's Flavor Table

Marilyn Wallace, the owner of Red’s Flavor Table in Inglewood, started small. At age six, she began prepping ingredients for cakes, chopping vegetables for roux, and learning from the cooks who worked in the kitchen of her mother’s restaurant/nightclub.

“Mom would have me sift flour for her cakes” said Wallace, a native of Marksville, Louisiana, who was raised in Port Arthur, Texas.

Body Butter Lady

As a child growing up in her native Senegal, Marianne Ndiaye, now known in Inglewood as the “Body Butter Lady,” had eczema. “It was very bad,” she said. “My hand would literally have so many cuts I’d wear gloves when I went out in public. I couldn’t find anything to use on my skin that eased the itching and pain.”

When she moved to Inglewood 20 years ago, after studying computer science at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Senegal and at the University of Montreal, her eczema worsened. After trying numerous chemical creams and lotions that didn’t work, she set ou to solve the problem by returning to her roots and using African remedies.

Sweet Red Peach

What started with a desire to perfect red velvet cake grew. Oreo cookie cupcakes, peach and apple cobblers, and banana pudding followed, and Karolyn Plummer realized she had found her passion. That was 24 years ago. Today, Plummer, 53, is the proud owner of the immensely popular bakery located across from SoFi Stadium.

Miracle Theater

Owen and Mariana Smith reimagined the possibilities and bought the building with the goal of turning it into one of the city’s premier independent entertainment centers. They kept the name but for their own, personal reasons. “We thought it would be a miracle if we could keep it going,” said Mariana. “We thought, this is going to be a Miracle. It stuck.”

Reck' Creations

When it comes to showing love for his hometown of Inglewood, Bobby Brimmer, the owner of Reck’ Creations Clothing Company, literally wears his heart on his sleeve. He also wears it on his caps, hoodies, t-shirts, sweats, and everything else he sells in his boutique located on Market Street in downtown Inglewood.

Sip & Sonder

“Our coffeehouses are hubs where creatives, entrepreneurs, freelancers, curators, and everyone in between can simply exist, grab a cup of coffee, connect, create, and put sonder into action,” Amanda-Jane Thomas said. The cafe was designed to feel like a home away from home, where the baristas serve “out-of-this-world coffee.”

WE WANT TO STAY CONNECTED

The ITC wants to ensure you have plenty of options for conversations and information-sharing. Many stakeholder outreach events and meetings have been held during the planning, environmental and design process and we want to continue that engagement.

WE WANT TO STAY CONNECTED

The ITC wants to ensure you have plenty of options for conversations and information-sharing. Many stakeholder outreach events and meetings have been held during the planning, environmental and design process and we want to continue that engagement.

Engagement Includes:

Transit Rider Surveys

The outreach team conducted transit rider surveys to inform and solicit feedback about the Project from transit riders throughout Inglewood about the project and encourage their engagement. The team also utilized Project boards, video commenting, and Project information flyers with QR codes which enabled riders to sign-up for Project updates and complete the survey at a more convenient time.

Video comments of transit riders’ stories were also captured as an alternative to filling out the survey. All materials were provided in English and Spanish, and Spanish-speaking staff were available.

Business Outreach

The Project conducted door-to-door outreach along Market Street, Manchester Boulevard, and Prairie Avenue. These visits were in addition to a virtual business roundtable meeting and mixer as well as project information flyers, surveys and fact sheets shared with businesses and owners. All materials were provided in English and Spanish, and Spanish-speaking staff were available. Both meetings included a brief presentation followed by an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the Project.

Community Meetings

The Project holds community meetings throughout Inglewood to help inform and reach wider audiences within the Inglewood community and to provide small groups of community members with a project update, share project benefits and solicit feedback.

These community meetings are coordinated and facilitated in pockets of Inglewood to foster informal discussions about the Project. These brief presentations are a way to speak to the community on a grassroots level and encourage more of a conversation rather than a formal presentation. Block Parties and House Parties are also an opportunity for neighbors to learn project facts, timeline and benefits. Some representative meetings have included Grace Park HOA, Ellis Avenue Block Club, and Carlton Square HOA.

Open Houses are also held as an opportunity for people to view project exhibits, ask subject matter experts questions, and allow individuals ample time to understand Project details.

Key Stakeholder Presentations

Key stakeholders and community organizations provide vital input and feedback on the ITC Project. We provide regular updates and presentations to these groups and make ourselves available to anyone in the City of Inglewood interested in scheduling a presentation for a Homeowners Association, a community organization, a group of workers, or neighborhood friends.

Pop-Up Events

The outreach team participates in pop-up community events with opportunities for tabling and booth space. The pop-up events provide information such as project boards, fact sheets and electronic and paper opportunities to comment on the Project including surveys and video commenting.
